Tea Service: Grace and Courtesy

All little ones benefit from grace and courtesy lessons.  Daily meal times, including our program's tea time, teach children how to be a part of a community, to practice manners, and to be social with others.  Teaching social-emotional development in early childhood is part of teaching to the whole child.  Aspects such as the child's sense of self, respect for the rights of others, trust, and relationship building are all a part of teaching prosocial behavior, empathy, self esteem, and responsibility for actions.

Our herbal, child-friendly teas are prepared to a perfect 105 degrees.  Toddlers practice serving each other, and waiting to begin eating until everyone is ready.  Tea time doubles as our snack time here at Neverland Nursery.  Everyday around mid afternoon, the children are offered healthy snacks and tea.  Fresh fruits and veggies are always offered first.

“A child who becomes a master of his acts through… repeated exercises of grace and courtesy, and who has been encouraged by the pleasant and interesting activities in which he has been engaged, is a child filled with health and joy and remarkable for his calmness and discipline.”

Floor Beds: Method from Italy

Our center uses floor beds instead of cribs! Floor beds permit movement, and independence from day one.  Offering the chance for infants and toddlers to choose when they wish to nap is crucial to their sense of self development.  We go off of each child's unique daily schedule, rather than a predetermined one.  When sleepy cues are observed by the caregivers, the children are helped to rest, or if they so choose, are able to lay down on their own.  Floor beds are great for infant and toddler visionary skills, which aids in cognitive development.  Floor beds also aid in physical development.  Even infants that have not began to crawl yet are able to more freely move their limbs without the hinderance of crib bars or slats.

“One of the greatest helps that could be given to the psychological development of a child would be to give him a bed suited to his needs and cease making him sleep longer than necessary. A child should be permitted to go to sleep when he is tired, to wake when he is rested, and to rise when he wishes. This is why we suggest that the typical child’s bed should be done away with as has already been done in many families. The child instead should be given a low couch resting practically upon the floor, where he can lie down and get up as he wishes...”
